Catalpa is an excellent substitute for black walnut. Black walnut and catalpa are trees belonging to Juglandaceae Juglans, but the terminology varies from region to region, just as japonica rice and indica rice are both rice. So how do we distinguish the two? The secret is texture.

1. there is dense brown hole on the annual ring of black walnut, but there is no dense brown hole on the ring line of Catalpa bungei.

2. Compared with catalpa, there are less Brown holes and more uniform distribution, and black walnut has more brown holes, which distribute along the annual line, and the closer to the annual line, the more.

3. Black walnut wood is dark in color, but its color is uneven, ranging from light yellow-brown to chestnut-brown, while catalpa sapwood has little difference in color.
