Function test standard for futon sofa bed

Evaluation:Backrest strength test 


Criteria:No structural breakage or deformation of the backrest at 150 lb. for 1 min. applied at 16 in. above the seat Type I & II: Apply a load that is initially 70° to the plane of the backrest while the backrest is against the back stop position Type III: Apply a load that is initially 90° to the plane of the backrest 


Evaluation:Seat static load 


Criteria:Apply a test load to seating area for 1 minute. Outdoor sample – 400 lb Indoor sample – 300 lb If the sample has more than one seating area, Two seating areas – Simultaneously test on both seating areas Three seating areas – Simultaneously test on one end seating area and the center seating area Four seating areas or more – Simultaneously test on two adjacent seating areas followed by two adjacent center seating area Shall not have any permanent deformation larger than 1/4 in., loss of functionality or structural failure

Criteria:No structural breakage, max 1/4 inch deformation when 200 lbs test load free - falls from 6 inch to the center of the seat onto a 19" x 19" x 3/4" piece of plywood when mattress is not supplied. 

Prior to testing identify the dimensional measurements taken. After testing identify the dimensional measurement that has exceeded the allowable tolerance for deformation, record and report the dimensional measurement prior to and after testing. If necessary, attach a digital image of the sample. 

(Modification = use standard plywood unless mattress specified by manufacturer has been provided for testing) 

Evaluation:Seating - front stability 


Criteria:For multiple seating - Tipping force is measured in the 45° to the test platform. The tipping force shall not be less than 40% of the total chair weight. For single seating - Shall not overbalance when a horizontal 4.5 lb outward pulling force is applied to the base of a 135 lb load, centered 60 mm from the mid point of the edge of the sample. 

Evaluation:Seating - rear stability 


Criteria:The chair shall not tip over when loaded.  For a Type I & Type II chair, 13 disks are placed in the seat. For a Type III chair, 6 disks are placed in the seat and a horizontal force is applied to the highest disk at a location 6 mm (0.25 in.) down from the top. 


For chairs with seat height < 710 mm (28.0 in.), calculate the force as follows: 

F = 0.1964 (1195 – H) Newton. H is the seat height in mm. • [F = 1.1 (47 – H) pounds force.]. H is the seat height in inches. 

For chairs with seat height equal to or greater than 710 mm (28.0 in.), a fixed force of 93 N (20.9 lbf.) shall be applied. 



Evaluation:Front seating capacity 


Criteria:No failure under manufacturer’s claim (300 lb if no claim) loading at edge (6 in).
